Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi makes heartbreaking admission: ‘Taken from me’

Rock legend Jon Bon Jovi isn’t sure if or when he’ll perform live after undergoing major surgery.

The 62-year-old Bon Jovi frontman is preparing to release a new album called Forever with his band — but he may not be able to tour it.

The album is due to drop on June 7, but Bon Jovi is still not back to full vocal strength two years after surgery on an “atrophied” vocal cord.

Recording an album was manageable, he said in a recent radio interview, but going on the road would put much more pressure on his voice, and his doctors had instructed him to take it easy.

Bon Jovi managed to perform live on February 2 at a Grammy Awards event in his honour, but singing for several hours every night for weeks, even months on end, would be a different matter altogether.

“I’m well on the road to recovery and was able to take my time and do a song a day when I made the record,” he told Boston radio station Mix 104.1.

“It’s my desire to do a tour … but I’m just still recovering from a major surgery,”

Speaking in a separate interview with the Ultimate Classic Rock magazine, Bon Jovi said he had to go through a lot of “dark misery” to make the new album.

He elaborated during a February 10 Television Critics Association panel ahead of the release of his documentary Thank You, Goodnight.

Bon Jovi said he had feared his vocal ability was being “taken away” from him when he learned he would need surgery on the instrument he relied on to make a living.

He was devastated to think that “God was taking away my ability,” saying, “there was no reason for any of this”.

Explaining what led up to his surgery, Bon Jovi said: “One of my cords was literally atrophied”.

“My craft was being taken from me,” he added.

He said he found a surgeon who gave him a “cutting-edge implant to build the cord back up”.

“The rest of it I can deal with,” he said.

“I can write you a song, I can perform as well as anybody, but I need to get my tools back.”

In happier news, it was recently revealed that Bon Jovi’s son, model Jake Bongiovi, had become engaged to Stranger Things star Millie Bobby Brown.

The 19-year-old British actress posted a photo to Instagram on March 12 showing Bongiovi, 20, embracing her (Bongiovi is the original Italian spelling of Bon Jovi).
