The Red Sox have announced that outfielder Jarren Duran will be suspended for two games after he was heard using a homophobic slur while addressing a heckling fan.
In a statement, the Red Sox said the suspension was given in consultation with Major League Baseball.
Duran, 27, will begin serving the suspension Monday against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park.
The team also announced that Duran’s salary from the two games will be donated to the Federation of Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays, the largest organization in the country that is dedicated to supporting the LGBTQ+ community.
Duran directed the homophobic slur at a fan at Sunday’s game at Fenway Park. The fan could be heard shouting, “Tennis racket! Tennis racket! You need a tennis racket!” He replied, “Shut up,” followed by a curse word and the homophobic slur.
After the game, Duran released a statement through the team.
“During tonight’s game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan,” Duran said. “I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that
Duran was a first-time All-Star this season. He is hitting .291 with 14 home runs and 48 RBI. He leads the league in doubles (36) and triples (13).
