‘Not meant to be’: Soward sacked as Dragons NRLW coach as club legend weighs up mid-season exit
Axed Dragons NRLW coach Jamie Soward is weighing up whether to finish the 2024 season after the club offered not to extend his deal beyond this season.
The Daily Telegraph reported Soward was told by club CEO Ryan Webb that his services were not required beyond the end of the 2024 campaign.
The shock development came after the Dragons thumped the Eels 42-14 last weekend, with Soward now contemplating whether to leave his position with immediate effect.
Soward took to social media on Monday to express his disappointment over the club’s call on his future as coach.
“Guess it’s not meant to be. All good. Keep it movin’,” Soward said on X, formerly Twitter.
The Dragons are still in with a slim chance of playing finals with three games left in the regular season, but will likely miss the knockout games for the second straight year under Soward.
The former club premiership winner is unsure whether seeing out the season is the right move given the awkward situation surrounding his future.
Soward has been at the helm of the Dragons NRLW side since 2021 and only extended his deal for a further two season last year.
The 39-year-old has also publicly expressed an interest in the NSW Women’s head coaching role after current coach Kylie Hilder’s Sky Blues lost their second-consecutive series in 2024.
Soward took the Dragons to the grand final in his first season in charge, but results have gone down hill since and the club believes the team needs a new voice to take them forward.
Soward has won 13 and lost 15 of his 28 games in charge of the Dragons over four seasons at the helm.
